In the heart of Place Max Barel in Nice, a renowned family business has taken over from another. If the Gatto family attracted the people of Nice for fifty years, it is now the Dumas family’s turn to set up their third real estate agency there.

GATTO STATION: THE ESSENCE OF A FAMILY BUSINESS

Who does not know the Gatto Station is not from Nice. For 57 years, these “vintage” gas station attendants animated Place Max Barel. It has been almost a year since the curtain fell on this institution. Marie-Claire Gatto, daughter of the founder, tells us about this family adventure.

It all started in 1957, when the Gatto family arrived in France after fleeing the war in Algeria. After a first stopover in Paris and years of hard work, they came to settle on the Côte d’Azur. The call of the sea was too strong for these Mediterraneans at heart, “even if our dad never went to the beach”.

In 1965, the couple, Louis and Carmela, took over the gas station. Gradually, their three children, Marie-Claire, François and Pierre-Antoine joined the family business. Each member naturally occupies a strategic place. The credo of the house? The client is king. “We had to greet each customer, do their windshield, respect a meticulous protocol”. Protocol that has endured for decades. Behind each customer, a Gatto keeps watch: a smile, attentiveness, impeccable service… “We were brought up in this spirit of respect for customers”.

For more than half a century, the Gatto family has worked hard to provide a unique experience for each customer. “It was very hard to get rid of customers in the first few months,” confides Marie-Claire. When the establishment closed, she had never received such many flowers, letters, phone calls… The people of Nice were very attached to this small business.

Let’s not forget that Place Max Barel is a strategic point in the city. Since the closure, Marie-Claire and her brothers have received many buyout offers. The choice fell on Agence Dumas: “We are happy that it is them. We have peace leaving our baby to a family business but above all to hard workers. “.
